About This Site
TravelingSista.com is a space created for the children of the African Diaspora (man, woman, blossoming and mature) where you can come and get a glimpse of the topics that are important to the Black community who are looking to broaden their travels or even relocate to another country. Although most of the information provided is specific to Tanzania, a lot of the principles and foundations can be applied to any African country. Here, you can get reliable and specific information on visiting or moving to Tanzania as well as pertinent links to needed information. I’ve also included a Q & A tab on this site to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about transitioning. The blog tab is also an insightful tool to get a more candid view of parts of my journey.
About Traveling Sista
Many people may know me as Traveling Sista, but I go by Kathryn. No novel here. I’ll keep this short and sweet…
I was born in San Diego, CA and grew up in Newport News, VA. Primarily raised in a single family home, I was fortunate enough to be exposed to the world at a very young age. My adventures started when we (myself, my mother, and brother) left California and went to Holland to live with my grandparents around the age of 3. My grandfather, who at this time was retired from the Navy after 31 years and now working as a civil employee, sent for us to come out. A few years later, we moved to Virginia to take care of my great grand mother in her last years, and there we stayed.
After I graduated high school, I decided to go to college for a year. I looked up and my life was a hot mess. At that point I felt that my only option was to join the military. Following in the footsteps of my grandfather I chose the Navy. Although I had traveled a bit as a child and teenager, here is where I got the bulk of my adventures in. I was stationed in Hawaii and Guam, and traveled everywhere from Malaysia to Dubai and everywhere in between. When I got out in 2012, I had about 20 countries under my belt. Directly after I got out of the Navy I went to college and completed 2 degrees in Graphic Design and Film Production. That put me at 2016. In short, I was tired of America and the heavy energy that was looming around. I decided that it was time for a major change in my life. So I did some major research on where I wanted to relocate, landed on Tanzania, bought a plane ticket, sold my stuff, and got the hell out of dodge. Now here I am, on a mission to help other Black Diasporans worldwide to find their place in the African Sun.

Tanzania is a country in East Africa with a population of about 56 million people. Tanzania is home to the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, Mt. Kilimanjaro, home to the very first humans known to walk the earth over 6 million years ago, and home of one of the oldest known ethnic groups in the world, the Hadzabe people. Located About 30 miles off the eastern shore Tanzania is the island of Zanzibar: a prominent hub in the East African Arab Slave Trade. In the northern regions of Tanzania lies the vast Serengeti plane, home to millions of animals in sub- Saharan Africa, as well as a number of other national parks. Tanzania itself is filled with a rich history, natural beauty and wonder.
The national language of Tanzania is Swahili, which is a Bantu language, but not an original language of Tanzania. Before the coming of the Arab slave trade, Tanganyikan people spoke their various tribal languages. (Tanganyika is the name of Tanzania pre 1964, before the unification of Zanzibar and Tanganyika, which then became Tanzania.)
Colonization of Tanganyika formally ended in 1961 under the rule of Tanganyika’s first presidedt, Julius Nyerere. Prior to Nyerere freeing Tanganyika from British rule in 1961, Germany ruled the land up until the end of World War I. (1914 - 1918)
